12/27/2023 0 Comments Museum of pinball![]() Roller Coaster Tycoon has been a popular choice among PC gamers for years, but did you know that a pinball version of the game also exists? You probably won’t see many around, since the machine isn’t exactly cheap (they sell for several thousand dollars), but you’ll find this cool machine at the Asheville Pinball Museum, waiting for you to test your flipper finesse. These days, you’ll be lucky to actually find one – unless you visit the Asheville Pinball Museum, that is. The classic showdown between an Italian plumber and enormous monkey (and those stinking barrels) was once a mainstay in arcades across the nation. Stunning design featuring popular elements from the television series make this machine as visually impressive as it is fun to play. Whether you want to believe it or not, you can relive 90’s sci-fi glory when you play the X-Files pinball machine. The artwork and game design will take you right back to your younger years! 2. Help everyone’s favorite half-shell heroes take on Shredder when you play one of the coolest machines on display at the Asheville Pinball Museum. Get the Guide 7 of the Most Unique Finds at the Asheville Pinball Museum 1. If you’re looking for even more to enjoy during your next visit to Western North Carolina, request access to our free Vacation Guide, and start planning an unforgettable trip! When you visit the Asheville Pinball Museum, you can step into yesteryear and not only learn all about these iconic gaming machines, but play them, too! We’ve listed a few of the coolest, most unique pinball machines (and old-school video games) that you’ll find at the Asheville Pinball Museum. Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, and more were once the staples of quarter-fed entertainment, including the beloved pinball machine. Sure, they’re a lot of fun, but they don’t quite offer the nostalgia that you can find in an arcade. Games like Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, and Halo have taken over the gaming scene, along with the consoles they’re played on. Sometimes less is more, and that adage is true even when applied to video games. 12/27/2023 0 Comments Sequential art![]() He even goes so far as to point out the underlying physical anatomy of the human face and body, and he creates rather detailed charts of facial expressions such as fear, joy, surprise, or anger (these disembodied faces, while certainly explanatory, are easily the single creepiest part of the book). From there, he discusses how to convey emotional, physical, and narrative information to the reader by examining the complexities of drawing facial expressions, bodily posture and gestures, and other attributes of body language. As McCloud explains it, these fundamental sets of choices create the building blocks for constructing compelling narratives with which audiences will readily identify. He begins by specifying the rhetorical fundamentals of the craft, or what he refers to as the "five choices": moment, frame, image, word, and flow. In his recognizable comic-book-styled format (mostly black and white, cartoonish, with bold line work), McCloud proceeds to explain to the reader the vast array of technical, artistic, and rhetorical tools available to authors and artists. This attention to the craft (from the storyboarding stage to the design of characters, to the development of settings, and down to inking and coloring) elevates this book above a whole slew of related how-to books clogging the racks at your local comics store, which focus primarily on refining illustration techniques and developing styles. In other words, the book delves into long-standing rhetorical issues such as ascertaining audience expectations and generic conventions, defining an explicit purpose for one’s text, and developing an appropriate tone or affect for delivery. ![]() More than simply delineating these options, however (and the reason that I refer to the book as a rhetoric of comics), he also articulates why someone might likely make certain choices over others to enhance dramatic effect, promote ambiguity, or develop identification with characters. McCloud's overriding purpose is to present the reader with a range of possible choices for the various elements of comics writing, such as panel placement, lettering styles, what action to capture, and which words to use. Making Comics offers readers a rather thorough overview of the entire universe of comics illustration, examining not only comic books and the graphic novel, but also manga, daily comic strips, and single-panel cartoons. In 2006, McCloud returns to form with Making Comics, a work that offers readers and practitioners of comics alike a rhetorical handbook for an art form that is finally getting the kind of serious academic attention that it deserves. McCloud called for a radical restructuring of the form of comics as well as the industry’s professional demographics (critic Gary Goth even penned a dismantling of the book entitled "McCloud's Cuckoo-Land"). In 2000, McCloud released Reinventing Comics, a follow-up work that upset many of his former fans because of its provocative, manifesto-like argument. In 1993, McCloud gave us the theoretically insightful (and whimsically illustrated) Understanding Comics, which received almost unanimous praise and gave academics an analytical footing from which to study comics and the graphic novel. Making Comics is the third book by comics artist McCloud and arguably his most practice-oriented one. We can read McCloud’s text as a rhetoric of comics in that it not only offers readers practical and theoretical advice for producing aesthetically effective and engaging comics of their own, it also demonstrates its own argument in a sophisticated yet visually appealing manner. It is within this context that we can read Scott McCloud’s book Making Comics: Storytelling Secrets of Comics, Manga, and Graphic Novels. For the most part, such efforts tend to focus more on the analysis and critique of preexisting visual texts and less on how students themselves might produce such texts. Books in this vein expand our critical perspective of what counts as a worthwhile cultural artifact, moving beyond the confines of high art and into the sometimes maligned world of advertisements, graffiti, and even (perish the thought) comics. Review of Scott McCloud, Making Comics: Storytelling Secrets of Comics, Manga and Graphic Novels (Harper Paperbacks, 2006)īen McCorkle, Ohio State University at MarionĬompositionists have long held an interest in visual culture, as textbooks such as Seeing & Writing, Convergences, and Rhetorical Visions demonstrate, not to mention recent scholarly books such as Carolyn Handa’s Visual Rhetoric in a Digital World or Kristie Fleckenstein’s Vision, Rhetoric, and Social Action in the Composition Classroom. 12/27/2023 0 Comments Lock screen wallpapers for couples![]() This careful, considered approach will certainly be needed on the iOS 16 lock screen, as otherwise, it will become a mishmash of widgets and data that confuses more than it informs - complete with a design that I keep changing because it’s never quite right. It’s very easy to get carried away, at which time iOS’s simplicity, which gives it speed and that distinctive visual appeal, quickly disappears. This approach doesn’t do ColorOS any favors at all, and because I’m not a designer, whatever I come up with rarely gels, and I would rather someone else had just sorted it all out instead.Īpple’s iOS has always benefitted from a light touch when it comes to personalization, and even getting iOS 15’s home screens right requires very careful use of the existing options. Having a few options put in place by design experts over a carefully engineered core experience is very welcome, but leaving it all down to you is quite the opposite. It’s stuffed full of endless ways to change the look and operation of not just the lock screen, but every tiny aspect of the operating system. ![]() That’s what Oppo’s designers likely said when ColorOS 12 was released. Apple’s designers may as well say, “Here, we’re done for the day, you have a go.” A smattering of options to personalize it is obviously required, but add too much, and it quickly becomes overwhelming as we give in to the temptation of activating all of the options, losing any benefit in the process. I trust that when it comes up with a core look for the home and lock screen, it’s after a lot of experimentation by people who understand what works and what doesn’t. There’s no temptation to try this clock or that widget, add reports from an app that wants to bother me with notifications or be constantly informed about what the weather is doing.Īpple employs designers. It’s incredibly simple, it shows off my choice of wallpaper without interruption. There’s one clock design, you can change your wallpaper, and - outside of a few options related to the wallpaper itself - that’s it. What’s the problem?Īpple’s current lock screen is wonderfully simple. Apple says this means you will still have a “clear view of the personalized lock screen,” but it actually sounds like it’s just making room for all the rest of the rubbish you can now cover your lock screen in. ![]() Instead of a long list, notifications will stack at the bottom of the lock screen ready to be unrolled. Then, Live Activities will splash information from apps and Apple News across the lock screen, with scores from sports games and delivery information highlighted as features already. Expect developers to be given access to this, so they can adapt existing widgets from iOS 15 for the new lock screen, meaning there may well be dozens to choose from. Inspired by the Apple Watch’s complications, iOS 16’s lock screen can have tiny widgets added to it, showing information gathered from the weather app, battery levels, your activity in the Fitness app, alarms, and plenty more. This is really where the customization options should have stopped, but Apple has gone all-out in iOS 16. Also in iOS 16, you can change the look of the clock on the lock screen, choosing from “expressive type styles and color choices,” which is a nice addition. The Weather wallpaper sounds fun as it updates based on local conditions, and if the Astronomy wallpaper is anything like the one on Apple TV, it should look great. The depth-effect watch faces on the Apple Watch work well, but require a Portrait mode photo to work, and it may be the case on the iPhone too. Different lock screens can be created and changed with a swipe to match your mood. Plus, Apple has added several new wallpaper styles - Astronomy, Pride and Unity, and Weather - to the standard lineup of options. What does the new iOS 16 lock screen let you do? At its most basic, some of your wallpaper choices will have a multilayer effect added, allowing the subject to stand out against the background. ![]() It hasn’t shown up on ANY of my PCs so far.Install Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 (WSL 2) on Windows Server 2022. It carried a combined total of 1,593 tonnes of cargo into space. The US space shuttle programme was active from 1981 to 2011 for a total of 135 flights. In response to the investigation, NASA created the Office of Safety, Reliability and Quality Assurance and reconstructed the solid rocket boosters under the supervision of an independent commission. The report noted “failures in communication” led to a launch “based on incomplete and sometimes misleading information, a conflict between engineering data and management judgments, and a NASA management structure that permitted internal flight safety problems to bypass key Shuttle managers”. Icicles formed on the launch pad and service tower in the evening and early morning hours before the launch of the Space Shuttle Challenger in this NASA handout image dated Janu The morning of the launch saw temperatures of −2.2C to −1.7C (28.0F to 28.9F), far lower than normal for takeoffs. The investigation found concerns about the O-rings were raised by engineers at Morton Thiokol, the government contractor responsible for their production, but these concerns were ignored by NASA managers. The O-rings were never tested to withstand extreme cold, as was encountered as the shuttle flew higher on the morning of the explosion. The fault in the booster engine was determined to have been caused by rubber O-rings meant to seal rocket boosters. It found serious deficiencies in NASA management’s scientific understanding. The disaster spawned an investigation into the cause of the explosion called the Rogers Commission Report. "running any OS on a HDD in 2021 is disasterous" I'm thinking of partitioning the drive to be 500MB for Catalina, and 500MB for Mojave. And yet, instead of my initial plans to purchase a Thelio Mira from System76, I bought a 2019 iMac with an Intel i9 processor, 32GB of RAM, and a 1TB Fusion drive, on which I can install Mojave (it came with Catalina), and still run Adobe CS 5 (or 6). My tests with Linux and these apps proved that it was entirely doable. As the 2014 iMac is getting a bit long-in-the-tooth, and I absolutely WON'T rent my software, I considered moving everything to Linux, using the Adobe CS equivalents in the free software world: GIMP (for Photoshop), Inkscape (for Illustrator), and Scribus (for InDesign). for business on a 2014 iMac with 8GB of RAM and 500 HDD, and Mojave. Hope that Thanks so much for your revised ist! That certainly did the trick for me on macOS Monterey 12.1 with a M1 MacBook Pro. The fact that GIMP, Inkscape, Krita, and so on, were all hit by this should help you understand: we had no early access to Catalina, Apple did nothing to warn even those big projects, much less ours, and even now, with Catalina in the wild, I'm missing (a). Their Gatekeeper is not based on some open standard, it's not just a matter of me loading some Linux kernel module to enforce the same things Apple does there's no standard API for this. There's no way for me, as a developer, to emulate what Apple is doing here on my system. That means we need to (a) have a Mac OS PC (b) maybe have a developer license? (c) buy Xcode? (d) buy a signature? I really don't know what follows from (a) because I don't even have (a). This issue only affects Mac OS, and only the latest version of it. There are a few reasons, but the first one is really simple: FontForge is cross platform, primarily developed on Linux, with Windows being the other platform that gets the most developer attention. Is there any technical issues that prevent developers from doing so?Īnyway, I got the point - don't use the default folders that were created by the macOS. I am just asking something that I really don't know and if there is any offense then I would be really sorry for that. After that, the app should be able to operate in these folders. I'm just curious about and wondering why some other apps could call a window (floating box) from the system, that says something like "Do you want to authorize *** app to access *** folder?" and user could choose yes or no by clicking buttons at the window. It's maybe because I am currently not a mac developer and don't know very well about mac. I am puzzled by the mysterious behavior of OS, and can only partially understand your words. Certainly a fix won't be coming from me, as I have no access to any version of OS X to know what will work and what will not. As far as a real fix goes, I don't know that one will be immediately forthcoming. |
